What Does Your Admission Decision Mean?

March 10th comes each year with excitement and sometimes anxiety as families wait for private school admission decisions. What does your admissions decision mean and what should you do next? Here are the five different admission decisions you could receive, and how to respond to each.

Before March 10th:

Contact each school so you know your admission file is complete and that you will receive a decision on March 10th.

Learn how the school will inform you of the admission decision.

The most common ways to hear are by:

email

a posting online to a secure admission portal in a letter

Check each website so you know what to look for and when.

Some schools will let you know exactly what time decisions are posted and some give a range of times.

In most cases, if you've applied for Financial Aid you or your parents will receive a Financial Aid Notification.

In some cases parents will receive the notification separately.

Some schools may send the Financial Aid award a day or two after the admission decision is sent.

Decision Time!

If your decision is: ACCEPTED

Congratulations! We hope you are accepted to one of your three top choice schools. If you receive an acceptance or even more than one, carefully read through the materials the school(s) sent you. Make sure you understand items such as Five-day vs Seven-day boarding and when deposits are due. Check the admission packet for Revisit dates. Be sure to attend the Revisit days for any schools where you are accepted. If you were accepted to more than one school, revisiting the campus will give you a better understanding of what each school offers and which might be the best fit for you.

What should you do? Attend Revisit day and sign your enrollment contract and pay your deposit by the due date.

If your decision is: ACCEPTED, FINANCIAL AID WAITLISTED (OR NO FINANCIAL AID)

You may find that you are accepted to your first choice school, but you are waitlisted for Financial Aid. Schools receive more requests for aid than they can accommodate. Where to allocate Financial Aid resources is determined by an in-depth process. Your family may have applied for Financial Aid, but learns they are not eligible and therefore no award is given. Another possibility is your family is eligible for aid, but the family has been placed on the Financial Aid waitlist. Being placed on the Financial Aid waitlist means you need to wait to see if other accepted students decline their offer and the offer is made to you. The last possibility is you are accepted, your family is eligible for financial aid, but the school does not have the resources to grant you the aid you need and grants none. If you are granted Financial Aid, you will need to reapply each and every year you are at school.

What should you do? If this is the school you want to attend, reach out to the school and ask them to keep you on the Financial Aid waitlist. If you feel your family may need more aid than you were granted, you may ask to appeal the decision.

 If your decision is: WAITLISTED

A small group of highly qualified applicants is waitlisted. Being placed on the waitlist means the school thinks you are qualified for admittance although you are not granted a spot at this time. As schools see how many accepted students accept their offer of admission, you may be removed from the waitlist and be offered a spot in the school.

 What should you do?

If you know this is the school you want to attend, reply to the waitlist decision by telling the school you are interested and want to stay on the waitlist.

We do not suggest passing up an offer of acceptance from another school in order to stay on the waitlist.

 If your decision is: DENIED

Remember, it's all about 'fit'. While you were looking for the right fit schools to apply to, the schools were also looking for students meeting their mission and academic standards. Receiving a denial can be frustrating. You need to be proud that you completed the process, a process that not everyone begins, let alone completes!

What should you do? Find interests to explore and develop. Work at improving your GPA and interviewing skills. Consider working with an educational consultant to help you define which schools are a good fit for you. Look at schools offering Rolling Admissions after April 10th.

If Your Decision Is: NO DECISION

What happens if March 10th comes and goes without receiving an admissions decision? You should immediately contact the school to be sure a.) your application was complete and b.) your mailing and email addresses are correct.

What should you do? If your application was not complete, including your Financial Aid file, ask if the school will accept late applications. If not, look for a school with a Rolling Admissions policy.

Good luck to you as you hear back from schools!

Learn how the school will inform you of the admission decision.

The most common ways to hear are by:

a posting online to a secure admission portal in a letter

Check each website so you know what to look for and when.

Decision Time!

2026: Waiting For Your Private School Decision

If you spend your days waiting for a response from the school of your dreams, you’re not alone. Many students have their hearts set on one specific community and are anxiously awaiting an admission package. To help you navigate this period, we’ve gathered a few tips to keep you moving forward while you await the news of what next year holds in store.

While the waiting game struggle is real, a few simple strategies can help you stay calm and continue to demonstrate interest in your desired future school.

Try To Keep Busy—And Stay Calm

Take a deep breath; everything will fall into place. This is often difficult advice to follow, but lying awake every night can negatively impact your health, your second-semester grades, and even your social life. Instead, try meditation or yoga, channel your anxious energy onto the athletic field, hit the gym, or volunteer. Turning those nerves into a productive or fun activity is a great way to pass the time.

Keep In Touch—But Don’t Badger

It is perfectly okay to reach out to your admission counselor with lingering questions or to ensure all of your materials have been received, but try to avoid emailing daily! This rule also applies to parents; while it is understandable that you want the best for your child, let the students navigate this process. Admission officers prefer to hear from the student directly (except regarding financial aid), as this demonstrates maturity and genuine interest.

Write A Thank You Note

A thank you email to your admission officer or any teachers or coaches you met during your campus tour is a great gesture. An old-fashioned, handwritten card is even better, as it shows an extra level of effort. Taking the time to do this adds "demonstrated interest" to your admission file and leaves a lasting positive impression.

Avoid The Second-Semester Slump

Your applications are in and you have worked hard all fall—it might feel like you deserve a semester off. However, it is vital to keep your work ethic high. The time between submitting your application and receiving an acceptance is a critical period for your grades. If you end up on a waitlist, your second-semester performance could be the deciding factor. Schools like Bancroft School do review your final grades and maintain the right to rescind an offer of admission if a student falls significantly off track.

Have A Plan B Ready

It’s important to hope for the best, but not everyone gains admission to their first-choice school. Ideally, your list of schools includes a range of options that are a good match for who you are and will support your academic growth. Be proactive and find something to love about each school you applied to. Try writing out a list of "pros" for attending each institution; save the "cons" for later when you are actually deciding between your acceptances.

Make The Most of Your Current School

While you are anxious to move on and expand your horizons, stop and recognize how far you have already come. Your accomplishments are something to be proud of. You have worked hard to gain the tools necessary to succeed in a new, more challenging environment. Stand out in your current classes, truly engage in discussions, and value the friendships you have made. Life is about growth—be thankful for what you have learned so far and stay excited for the challenges that lie ahead.

What to Do If You Miss the Private School Application Deadline

Missing an application deadline can feel stressful—especially when you’ve just discovered a school that feels like the right fit. The good news? If you’re interested in Bancroft School, an independent day school for PreK-12 in Worcester, missing a deadline doesn’t necessarily mean missing your chance to enroll your student.

Many independent schools, including Bancroft, operate with priority deadlines rather than hard stops. Priority deadlines help schools review applications together and release decisions in a timely way—but they don’t always close the door to families who apply later.

So what should you do if you’re applying after the priority deadline?

First: Reach Out
If you missed the deadline by a short window—hours or even a few days—contact the Admissions Office directly. A quick email or phone call can clarify next steps and demonstrate your interest. Admissions teams understand that family circumstances change, and they’re often happy to guide you.

Ask About Rolling or Space-Available Admission
After priority deadlines, schools may continue to accept applications on a rolling, space-available basis. If you’re applying later in the spring or summer, ask whether openings remain for your particular grade and what the timeline looks like.

Understand the Waitlist
For grades with high demand, applying after the priority deadline may mean being placed on a waitlist. While that can feel uncertain, waitlists do move—particularly as families make final enrollment decisions. Staying in touch and showing continued interest can matter.

Think Carefully About Financial Aid Timing
If you’re applying for financial aid, deadlines are more important. Aid budgets are often allocated early. That said, it’s still worth asking what options may be available if you apply after the priority date.

Stay Engaged
If Bancroft is your first choice, let the Admissions Office know. Attend events, schedule a campus visit, and ask thoughtful questions. Genuine engagement helps admissions teams understand your interest and fit—and can make a difference when space opens up.

Bottom Line
Applying early is always ideal, but missing a deadline doesn’t automatically mean you’re out of options. With open communication, flexibility, and follow-through, families find that there’s a path forward.

Do you have an interview scheduled with an admission counselor? Congratulations! To help you prepare for the big day, we have gathered a few handy tools and common interview questions for you to review in advance.

Do you have an interview scheduled with an admission counselor? Congratulations! To help you prepare for the big day, we have gathered a few handy tools and common interview questions for you to review in advance.

While the interview typically happens face-to-face on campus, it is also possible to arrange a virtual interview with your admission counselor. Whether you are able to attend in person or end up chatting over a screen, it is important to pay attention to your communication skills. This ensures a positive two-way conversation where both you and your interviewer walk away having learned something new and interesting.

Practice Makes Perfect

Prior to your interview, practice with your family or friends. Provide them with the following questions and have them ask you in random order:

How would you describe yourself to someone who didn’t know you? Detail your personality and interests.

Who is a person from history you most admire? What is a question you would want to ask them?

What protagonist from a novel do you most closely identify with and why?

What is one challenge in your life you have had to overcome?

Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

What is a project or an event in your life where you have demonstrated leadership?

What do you hope to get out of your Bancroft School experience?

What are some of your academic strengths and weaknesses?

What is the most important thing you have learned in school so far?

If you could take one book with you to a desert island, what would it be and why?

What has been your proudest accomplishment in life to date?

The "Curve Ball" Questions

These are common interview questions, but don’t rule out a few signature fun ones depending on your interviewer. Ask your practice buddy to throw out a few curve balls, like:

If you were running out of your home due to a fire, what is the one thing you would grab on the way out?

Who in your family are you most like?

If you could start any club at school, what would it be?

Questions like these are often off-the-cuff, but they reveal a lot about your creativity and ability to think deeply about your personality. Try not to respond in only one or two words—your interviewer is hoping to get a better glimpse of your depth and thought process. Remember: the interview is NOT a quiz; it is designed to be a conversation.

Polishing Your Delivery

While you practice, be sure to keep your posture and language in check, too:

Be conscious of "filler" words. Notice how often you say “like” or “um.” These are placeholders for your thoughts when your brain needs a moment to catch up. This happens to everyone, but it can distract from your point. Even professional speakers occasionally stumble, but they often use a slight pause to work out their thoughts instead of a vocal filler.

Choose clarity over complexity. Communication should always top complexity. Unless a word truly adds to your sentence, keep it simple. The best speech writers and authors engage their audience by painting vivid images using clear words for complex ideas. Always err on the side of being concise.

Use your hands to express ideas. This may be more difficult on a screen, but it’s still effective! Gesticulation is the art of motioning with your hands to supplement your ideas. Using expression in your body language will captivate and engage your listener.

Let your posture speak for you. Chin up, shoulders back, and eye contact on point. Looking down or around the room during a conversation can unintentionally signal a lack of interest. Your body language is critical. Conveying interest and attentiveness to the person you are speaking with will always win your audience over.

Private School Admission Interview Tips

Private School Interview Tips

Visiting a private school can seem intimidating, but going into your visit or interview with the right mindset can make a huge difference to your overall experience. While it’s important to make a good impression, also make sure to consider what you think of the school and whether the environment is a good fit for your personal and academic needs. Your visit should be a day of information gathering, forming connections, and, importantly, envisioning a future for yourself on campus.

Here are a few handy private school interview tips to help ease the navigation process. These five steps will ensure that you get off on the right foot and make the most out of your visit.

1. Dress Comfortably—and Be Yourself

While you still want to dress professionally, it’s important to remember that you will be walking around campus and interacting with new people all day. Don’t wear anything outside of your comfort zone or shoes that will pinch your feet on a tour! Keeping style elements of who you are will also put you at ease, allowing you to feel more at home and project your personality.

Remember: Your school visit should ideally be a two-way exchange where the admissions office and faculty can learn more about who you are as a person, and you can find out about the school as a community. Don’t shy away from your true self.

2. Do Your Homework: Learn About the School Ahead of Time

Nothing demonstrates interest in a school more than a thoughtful question, and your tour guide or admissions officer will take notice. While you may be looking at several schools, take the time to browse the school website or social media platforms the night before your visit. This will help keep important questions or recent events fresh in your mind and demonstrate that you are following the school closely.

Note any signature programs that the school offers. Is traveling and world culture your thing? Ask about the humanities components at Bancroft School. Are you into basketball or other sports? Comment on any athletic victories recently accomplished by the varsity teams. Into physics? Inquire about a class project you saw on the school’s Instagram page.

3. Be Conscious of Your Body Language

You may feel tired and anxious on the day of your visit, but your body language often dictates the way you are perceived in a new environment. Try to maintain eye contact, offer a firm handshake, and keep a strong posture when interacting with new people on campus.

A look of boredom or slouched shoulders can suggest that you are being dragged along—which may feel true in the moment, but you might actually like the school! Approach every visit with a fresh mindset and positive attitude. Take the time to answer questions using more than one-word (yes or no) answers to help the natural flow of conversation.

4. Picture Yourself Using the Facilities—and Take a Class!

As you tour the campus, this is your chance to truly envision yourself as a new student. Strolling past the soccer field, imagine yourself running onto the turf with a friend after school. Entering the dining hall, imagine the lunches you’ll have or using the salad bar each afternoon.

If possible, arrange ahead of time with the admissions office to actually sit in on a class—this will be your best chance at engaging with the students and really getting a feel for how you fit into the student culture. At Bancroft School, you may be interested in signing up to sit in on a specific subject or even checking out one of the performing arts programs.

5. Stay in Touch and Follow Up

Following your visit, be sure to send an email or card thanking your tour guides and faculty for showing you around and answering questions. Admissions counselors meet hundreds of students in a given semester, but a personal follow-up note will stick out in their minds—and it is also likely to end up in your application file as "demonstrated interest."

Taking the time to follow up or ask clarifying questions demonstrates your continued interest in the school. If you wish to learn more from a student perspective, ask your admissions counselor for a current student contact! They will be happy to connect you with one of their student ambassadors.

When exploring private schools, families often face a choice: should they choose an urban school, rich with opportunities but limited in space, or a suburban school, with sprawling grounds but removed from the city's

You're not just choosing a school; you're choosing an environment for your child's entire Pre-K through 12 journey. We believe you don't need to compromise.

Bancroft School offers a unique solution. Perfectly positioned in Worcester, MA, and sitting on 34 acres of beautiful green space, we've turned the "either/or" dilemma into a "best of both" reality.

The City as Your Classroom: Worcester's Opportunities

At Bancroft, our location in Worcester—a center for innovation, arts, and higher education—gives our students a world of opportunity from their very first day.

Worcester isn't just a backdrop; it's an extension of our campus. This means students of all ages can:

Engage in real-world learning, from a Lower School visit to the Worcester Art Museum to an Upper School internship at a nearby tech startup.

Access world-class cultural institutions like The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts as part of their curriculum in music, arts, and history.

Develop a sense of civic responsibility through community partnerships.

The Space to Explore: Our 34-Acre Green Campus

Bancroft is different. Our 34-acre campus provides the "suburban" advantages right here in the Worcester. This allows us to offer:

Athletic facilities, including our Field House, extensive playing fields, tennis courts, and gymnasium space for everything from Pre-K P.E. to varsity championships.

Dedicated arts, innovation, and learning spaces for every grade, allowing for ambitious projects without compromise.

Beautiful green space, which includes a dedicated cross-country course, gardens, and playgrounds where our youngest learners explore the natural world and our oldest students can study.

At Bancroft, a student can learn about ecosystems in our on-campus woods in the morning and attend a professional performance downtown in the afternoon.

Find the Right Fit at Bancroft

When choosing a school, of course you want to consider the culture and academic experience, but also imagine the environment where your child will best thrive—from their first day of PreK to their high school graduation.

We invite you to explore a school that designed around student inquiry, community, and connections.

A Guide to the Private School Admission Journey

The private school admissions process can feel exciting—and at times overwhelming—as families explore the best educational fit for their student. If you’re beginning your search for a private high school this guide walks you through each step with clarity and confidence.

The private school admissions process can feel exciting—and at times overwhelming—as families explore the best educational fit for their student. If you’re beginning your search for a private high school this guide walks you through each step with clarity and confidence.

Fall: Research, Campus Visits, and Interviews

September–December

Fall is the perfect season to explore your options, tour campuses, and get a true sense of each school’s culture.

Research Independent High Schools

Start by creating a list of schools that match your student’s needs—academics, arts, athletics, robotics, student leadership, or a close-knit community. Review school websites, check Niche.com and Admission.org, and consider a local educational consultant if you want added insight.

Prepare for Campus Visits

During your visit, observe:

Classroom engagement

Teacher-student connections

Student life and extracurricular opportunities

The overall feel of the community

Pro Tip: Slightly more formal attire than everyday school clothes helps set a positive tone.

Preparation

The interview is a conversation, not a test. Encourage your student to reflect on their strengths, interests, and what they hope to find in a high school. Practicing a few common questions helps build confidence.

Follow-Up

Send a short thank-you email to the admissions team within 24 hours of your visit or interview.

Financial Aid

Bancroft School believes that students benefit significantly from learning within a socio-economically diverse student body. The School's financial aid budget is designed to supplement family resources to allow a healthy number of students to enroll who would not have been able to do so without the School's assistance.

Learn more about Tuition Assistance.

Pro Tip: Submit your financial aid application as early as possible. Early submissions offer the best opportunity for receiving support.

Winter: Application Season

January–February

Winter is the heart of the application cycle for most private high schools in Massachusetts.

Finalize Your Application

Most independent schools—including Bancroft—have January deadlines for Upper School admissions. Use fall and winter breaks to draft and revise essay responses.

Teacher Recommendations & Transcripts

If you’re using the Standard Application Online (SAO), recommendation and transcript requests are automatically sent. Still, it’s always a good practice for students to personally thank their teachers for writing on their behalf.

Spring: Decisions & Next Steps

March–April

Spring brings clarity—and final decisions—for families.

Admission Decisions

Most private schools release decisions on March 10. Before the date approaches, confirm that your application file is complete and that you understand how decisions will be communicated.

Accepted Student & Revisit Days

Revisit Days in March and April help families get a final feel for student life, academic programs, and the campus community. Encourage your student to ask questions and engage with current Upper School students.

Final Enrollment Decisions

Most schools, including Bancroft, require enrollment contracts by April 10. This step officially secures your student’s place for the upcoming school year.

Ready to Take the Next Step?

Start Your Bancroft School Upper School Application Today

Choosing the right high school is an important family decision, and we’re here to help you navigate every step of the process.

Explore what comes next:
